Bediuzzaman, ‘The ‘Awf Work Ethic,’ and ‘Upholding the Word of God'

First in this study the meaning Bediuzzaman gave to the concept of ‘U pholding the W ord of G od’ ( / 'la-yi Kelimetuilah) will be discussed, then an attem pt will be made to define, again based on Bediuzzaman*s general approach, the general characteristics o f ‘the ‘A w f W ork E thic,’ which is one institutions necessary for reaching the stage o f Upholding the W ord o f God. The institutions of ‘M erchant Islam ’ and ‘M ujtahid Islam ,’ which form various categories of ‘the pioneer m inority,’ the group which will practise the ‘A w f W ork Ethic while reaching the stage of Upholding the W ord of God. Although generally speaking the work ethic concept comprises a total world view, here only econom ic aspects will be discussed, and social and political aspects in so far as they are closely related to econom ic activities. Rem aining aspects will be studied in another paper.
